Advance was pleased to host an online event on Tuesday, 29th September, to mark the launch of our report ‘A space to learn about relationships’. We were joined by an audience of almost 200; thank you to those who were able to participate. The event was opened by Advance Chief Executive, Niki Scordi.
Our first Keynote Speaker was London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Sophie Linden who provided an insight into the Mayor’s office and its strategy to tackle violence against women and girls.
This was followed by a presentation of Advance’s report, ‘A space to learn about relationships’, by Summer Alston-Smith, Director of Criminal Justice Services at Advance. The report along with presentation slides, which can be read below, focused specifically on young women who have been involved in the criminal justice system, and the impact harmful childhood experiences and trauma can have on their life, in particular, their early sexual experiences and the effect this has on their health. The session was concluded with a moving contribution from a woman with lived experience, read by Advance’s Young Persons Keyworker, Tia.
The Panel of Experts from Standing Committee for Youth Justice, Agenda, Women and Girls Network, Lloyds Foundation and Advance discussed key themes around the importance of a gendered, trauma informed, intersectional approach to young women in the criminal justice system.
We were then joined by our second Keynote Speaker, Domestic Abuse Commissioner, Nicole Jacobs who reflected on the Violence against women and girls strategy, the Domestic Abuse Bill and systemic change.
