We held the official opening event of Advance’s new London North Centre, welcomed by Niki Scordi (Advance CEO) which marked the expansion of our support services for women involved in the Criminal Justice System to cover a wider area of London.
We also heard from London’s Victims commissioner, Claire Waxman who discussed trauma informed approaches and women’s ‘victim’/’offender’ duality. We were also joined by Sam Cunningham, Director of Criminal Justice and Commissioning who shared with us the strategy for women in the criminal justice system in London and whole systems approaches.
To commemorate this occasion, the event included a special performance of poetry written by award-winning spoken word poet, Shareefa Energy and some of the women supported by Advance as part of the Minerva Project.
The poetry created by the women reflected their voices from a space of empowerment, introspection and reflection and Shareefa’s own performance consisted of pieces inspired by Advance’s work and her experience of collaborating with the women during poetry workshops organised by Advance.
