A safe, just and equal world for women

The power of Women’s Centres

This #SmallCharityWeek we celebrate all our small charity partners who work with us everyday in a coordinated community response, in community hubs and in our Women's Centres to support women and girls to lead safe, free and equal lives Our partners support women from Advance Women's Centres across nationally to ensure they are able to access the support they need in whatever way they need
Advance Women Centres are women-only safer spaces where women can join in, be themselves; somewhere they can share, learn, laugh, and heal.
When you cannot afford personal hygiene stuff, or even food. It was really great knowing that I can come and access things that I need. It can be really demoralising when you have to ask for basic things.

1 in 4 women experience domestic abuse, 1 in 4 women are raped or sexually assaulted and 1 in 3 women experience some form of harassment. Women are disproportionately affected by poverty, domestic abuse, and exploitation and until this is not the case, it is vital that women have bespoke services which cater to their specific needs, which includes safe spaces like Women Centres.

It is in the context of structural and societal inequality that women face multiple disadvantages including, but not limited to, mental health issues, domestic abuse, homelessness, and substance use, and often are sole carers for dependants. They will then face multiple barriers in trying to access support in relation to such issues, which is often compounded by other intersecting identities such as sexuality, disability, and race.

Most services are not set up to work with and support with the various complexities faced by women, and this requires long-term support. In response, Advance has 11 Women’s Centres, across London and six English regions including Hampshire, Kent, Thames Valley, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. At the core, they are value driven, gender and trauma informed, and work with women one on one, to address their needs in the way that they want. As well as providing access to groups and workshops, to support with needs and build on confidence and existing strengths in safe women only spaces with peers, and volunteer (lived experience) Peer Mentors. It is also a place where women can access necessities such as period products, clothing and baby formula, as well as access to computers, showers and washing machines. Ultimately, the Women Centres are spaces where women can join in, be themselves; somewhere they can share, learn, laugh, and heal.

Women were also asked to provide feedback of Advance Women’s Centres:

“I have not [previously] accessed the centres as I suffer with social anxiety and addiction. This is my first ever visit, but I’m glad I came”

“No stress at the centre, just relax. There are always people to talk to and I have met new people”

“When you cannot afford personal hygiene stuff, or even food. It was really great knowing that I can come and access things that I need. It can be really demoralising when you have to ask for basic things. However here nobody ever looked down at me for that. It can be really embarrassing to be in this situation and it is not easy”
Women’s Centre feedback

We asked Advance Women Centre Coordinators across our all locations about the importance of their Women’s Centres:

“Advance Charity’s Women’s Centres are safe spaces that women can access to meet with their support workers, attend groups or workshops, drop in for a chat and refreshments, as well as access donations of clothing and toiletries. They are non-judgmental spaces that women can come to with full confidence that their confidentiality and needs will be respected. We understand that each woman is an individual and will always take the time to welcome you and have a chat with you where possible.”

“It is so important for women to have this space. There are limited safe spaces for women in Kent, especially those who are facing financial hardship and need support from donations, including feminine hygiene products. Women often must access the same spaces as men, who could pose risks. Its great for women to have a space they feel comfortable in as it helps them to open up and allows us to offer a better package of support.

We know it will take a while for centre engagement to pick up in line with the number of women we are currently supporting as a service but with the amazing feedback we have received and the timetables we are offering and planning to offer we are confident with the support of probation, the centre visits will be a vital component in our holistic women’s service.”

Kent Regional Manager

“Some of the women who come to the centre struggle to leave the house and feel socially isolated. Through the groups at the Women’s Centre and trips outside the centres, they have been able to try new activities, like making clay decorations, painting, making chocolates, and visit new places, including Kew Gardens and the Victoria & Albert Museum. I have seen women grow in confidence since visiting the centre for the first time, and the women have made the space so uplifting and supportive.”
