The event opened with a moving performance of ‘Not pretty like the rainbow‘ by our partner, Clean  Break.  This was followed by a welcome from Advance CEO, Niki Scordi.

Our Keynote Speaker, Karina Wane, Assistant Director, Violence Reduction Unit highlighted the importance of a public health approach, recognising the multiple disadvantages and ‘adverse experiences’ of women as adults, as well as children, and the role we have as part of a whole system approach

Paddy Wivell, BAFTA award winning documentary director and producer, joined us to share his experience of filming ‘Prison 2’ at HMP Foston Hall, and insights he gained about women in prison who are mothers. Watch Kelly’s story, from Prison 2 here.

Advance’s Senior Researcher, Katy Swaine Williams, together with women with lived experiences, presented our new practice-based research report ‘A place to go like this’, reinforcing the importance of:

  1. a joined-up whole-system approach and providing the investment needed by all agencies
  2. having women’s centres in the community where the support needed is available to address underlying trauma – ‘a place to go like this’, and
  3. gender-specific criminal justice response and specialist women’s courts.

This was followed by Expert Panel discussions addressing the issues raised by the report, and Roundtable discussions, where participants contributed towards an action plan that aims to improve the outcomes for women and their children, which will be taken forward by London’s Blueprint Delivery Group.
