The horrific reality is that three women a week are killed by men. But behind that figure is an even darker truth…More women are dying by suicide as a result of domestic abuse.

The horrific reality is that three women a week are killed by men. But behind that figure is an even darker truth…More women are dying by suicide as a result of domestic abuse.

Suicides related to domestic abuse now occur at approximately three times the rate of domestic homicides.

The inseparable relationship between domestic abuse and suicide is highlighted in a new report from national women’s organisation Advance.

The Intersection of Gender, Domestic Abuse and Suicidality report also explores how survivors of abuse can be better supported, and perpetrators held to account.

Evidence suggests that since 2020, there have been at least three suicides every month where a history of domestic abuse has been present, with one study showing that at least one victim dies of suicide following domestic abuse every four days in the UK

Today on World Mental Health Day, Advance has released The Intersection of Gender, Domestic Abuse and Suicidality report to spotlight the scale of women tragically taking their own lives as a result of their abuser.

The link between domestic abuse and suicide is very evident in Advance’s own data. Since September 2022, every serious safeguarding incident at the charity involving suicide, attempted suicide, or suicidal thoughts has included domestic abuse as a contributing factor.
