To ensure public safety, reduce costs and ultimately save lives, solutions to reduce women’s re-offending must include addressing the root causes. In 2023, at least 7 in 10 of the women supported by Advance’s Criminal Justice services disclosed that they were survivors of abuse, and we suspect the actual figure to be higher.
Research has shown domestic abuse and trauma can drive women’s offending, with women being failed by the justice system both as “victims” and “offenders”. Women’s experience of domestic abuse can have dire consequences, and ultimately can lead to their deaths, whether at the hand of the perpetrator or through suicide.
Our community-based events will be held within our women’s centres or local venues. They aim to foster collaboration and build understanding of the relationship between women’s experience of domestic abuse and their offending among local leaders, change makers and organisations.
We believe that working with partners from statutory services, such as probation, judiciary, and local authorities, in a whole system, coordinated community response is vital to save lives, and in creating a world where women are safe, free and equal.

About Advance
- Advance’s vision is a world in which women and children lead safe, equal, violence-free lives so that they can flourish and actively contribute to society. The charity works with women who experience domestic abuse to be safe and take control of their lives, and women who have committed crime or are at risk of offending to break the cycle.
- As well as providing direct support, Advance works with statutory services, government agencies and other women’s charities to ensure a holistic approach to the issues these women face.
- Women must be referred to Advance, via statutory services or the charity’s self-referral scheme. For more information about who Advance is able to support, please visit Get help
