A safe, just and equal world for women

Angelou Partnership shortlisted for prestigious Charity Award

May 21, 2025
Advance has made the shortlist for this year’s Charity Awards, the longest-running and most prestigious awards scheme in the charity sector.

The national women’s charity has been shortlisted for the Angelou Partnership, which delivers Violence Against Women and Girls support services across London, led and coordinated by Advance.

The partnership is a collaboration of 10 voluntary organisations, each offering a different kind of specialist support, such as services tailored to Black and minoritised women and LGBT+ communities. The partnership also helps professionals and practitioners, including doctors, midwives and police officers, to identify domestic abuse and refer to our specialist domestic abuse services

Liz Mack, Advance CEO, says:

“Now celebrating its 10th year, Angelou thoroughly deserves this recognition for its innovative and intersectional approach to supporting women experiencing abuse. Shortlisting for this award highlights the partnerships commitment to providing a single front door to specialist by and for, gender and trauma-informed VAWG support, unique to each woman.

“The partnership was born out of the fundamental recognition that each survivor’s experiences of abuse will be different, and she will have different needs – a ‘one size fits all’ approach doesn’t work. By embedding intersectionality into everything the partnership does, together with our partners we aim to create a truly accessible trauma informed and culturally responsive support service for women, who all too often fall through the gaps in mainstream services.

“Since its inception, Angelou has walked alongside women and girls more than 12,000 times, helping them feel safer and to improve their wellbeing during and after abuse. The fact that 94% of these women and girls reported a reduction in abuse due to support and advice received is just one outcome that proves that Angelou works.”

The Charity Awards winners will be announced on July 3rd at a gala evening in London, presented by BBC news presenter Asad Ahmad.

Matthew Nolan, chief executive of Civil Society Media which organises the Charity Awards, said:

“Every year the Charity Awards serve as a moment for the sector to reflect and acknowledge the transformative power of compassion, determination and resilience. The awards amplify the voices of those making a difference, inspiring others to join in creating positive change. At a time when the sector is struggling with higher costs, shrinking donations and ever-increasing demand for its work, it is reassuring and inspiring to see the extent and quality of charitable activity that is still going on across the country.”
