A safe, just and equal world for women

Christmas card fundraiser at Advance’s Hampshire centre

December 5, 2023
Craft sessions at the centre in Portsmouth have created batches of lovely, handmade Christmas cards to sell in the local community.

Advance’s Women’s centres are vital outlets of community-based support. calm, safe, welcoming spaces for women to come along, meet with advocates and be involved in events and activities with other women.

Advance Hampshire Co-ordinator Lied M said:
“I thought that making Christmas cards to sell would be a good way to raise funds for our women’s centre. We haven’t put a price tag on the cards, we’ll just put a little sign beside them saying: ‘give what you can afford’.

Every penny we raise will make a difference to the women who rely on our centre. Even if we make £10, we can buy biscuits and drinks for our Coffee Morning. But that very same amount is also what it costs to buy phone credit for one woman so she can stay in touch with friends, family and other support.  It’s lovely seeing our service users getting really involved with making the Christmas cards. It’s so much more than a fun activity, it makes our ladies feel useful by working towards a shared purpose.”

The craft sessions are run by Creatful CIC, an enterprise sharing creativity in Hampshire to boost wellbeing and social inclusion. It was launched by Nancy Fellows, from Waterlooville, when she found herself stuck between two NHS mental health services, not meeting the requirements to be treated by either.

Nancy Fellows from Creatful said:
“I have a passion for making sure all people have spaces in their communities where they feel safe and welcomed. I believe we can use creativity to bring people together and empower people to manage their own wellbeing.”
Denise*, a regular attendee at Advance’s Hampshire women’s centre, said:
“This centre and the staff here always go the extra mile. I used to have to come here as a condition of my probation. But when I didn’t HAVE to come any more, I carried on because I like to. Without this centre, I’d have gone under.”
Vivien*, another regular at the centre, said:
“I love coming here two days a week. It’s a time when I can just forget all the worries and everything else going on. I’ve really enjoyed making the Christmas cards. It’s been therapeutic.”
